How I got on MSNBC + PR Opp for You

    July 27, 2011

I have always been a big believer of these three things:

    • Give, Give, Get
    • Meet face-to-face
    • Become a true expert in your field
Those mantras are what ultimately landed me a gig on MSNBC's Your Business. In case you missed the show on Sunday morning, here it is. We talk about how to market yourself in a crowded market, if you should do LLC or S Corp, how to use social media to make money, etc. Oh, and I also have a major (and fun) PR Opp for you so make sure to read it at the end and get back to me if it applies!

So the story began with Give, Give, Get. I have always tried to use my Savor platform to give people visibility and business. One of those people happens to be Mike Michalowicz, author of Toilet Paper Entrepreneur. He has spoken at our Women Entrepreneurs Rock the World conferences and has led a few of our 7-Figure Club sessions. It's a win/win for us... he provides great content, I provide quality audiences.

FACE-TO-FACE. One day, I invited him to be on Savor Show. After taping, he turned to me and said, "You have to be on MSNBC's Your Business. You'd be perfect!" He was giving me an opportunity, and he was also giving the producers a resource.

    {On a side note, I had pitched the MSNBC producer for nearly two years. Nada, rien, nothing, zilch and zero. Mike slam dunked it for me after seeing me in action face-to-face.}

So those were the things that got me on the show. But it's not what got me re-invited.

BECOME A TRUE EXPERT. I have talked about how becoming a real expert in your field takes around 10,000 hours, roughly four years of full-time work.

When you delve that deeply into one subject, you begin to develop substance. You are not as nervous at "lights, camera, action!" because you know your stuff. I have built my businesses in the last four years. I have twenty years of experience talking and performing as a concert pianist. All this comes into play when we go on air.

Have to give credit where credit's due... the 10,000 hours comes from Mr. Self Development!

Check out his website... no fancy design, but super-tight branding with EXCELLENT advice. Authentic and non-sales-y. Very Give, Give, Get.

Dear Mr. Self Development, if you are reading this, I'm wondering if you would come to share your words of wisdom at the Women Entrepreneurs Rock the World conference in 2012 OR to chat with us on one of our Fireside Chats on the phone. Q & A on a blog is totally cool, too. I promise that I'm not an internet stalker... just know a good thing when I see it. :)

So roll up your sleeves, niche yourself, give freely, meet face-to-face, and become a true expert. The added benefit to this is that your life becomes rich with meaningful friendships, which ain't a bad way to live life.

Okay, so for the PR Opp! JJ Ramberg, host of Your Business, is writing a book with two producers on simple tips for small business owners.

JJ Ramberg prepares to go on air and lead the expert panel.

If you are Premium Member, go to the VIP Cafe to pitchI am going to hand-deliver it to JJ in an email next Monday.

Feel free to post your practical business tip here along with your website... you never know who is reading! :)
