We were sued! (And the powerful lesson we learned from it...)

    September 20, 2012

    It was a bizarre moment.

I was sitting at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel overlooking Central Park with my lawyer (my sister). We were waiting to meet with the people who were suing us. The lawyer jibber jabber was driving me nuts, so I wanted to meet in person to see if we could sort it out human to human.

They were suing because they didn't want Om Aroma & Co. associated with spa services, and since a good part of our incoming revenue comes from facial services, we had a problem.

As we sipped on hot tea, a woman approached us and said, "Hi, Angela! Do you remember me?"

    I couldn't place the face.

"You know, we met on Wall Street a year ago, and you have that cute adorable dog..."

My brain wheeled around until I remembered back to when my husband and I lived on Wall Street. Sienna was barely 12 months old. We were out walking our dog when a lady stopped me and said, "Is that you, Angela Jia Kim? I love your vlogs so much and adore Savor the Success! I just love everything you are doing and stand for."

She was sweet and practically gushing.

"Yes, I remember you! You have a dog, too, right? "

"Yea." She looked around. "So is this where we are meeting for the lawsuit?"

It kind of knocked the wind out of me.

"Wait. You... you?" A Savor member?

"Yea, it's me. I know, it's awkward." She sat down.

When I first received the Cease & Desist, my immediate reaction was, "I wonder how this is meant to get me to uplevel." I've learned through the years that when something seemingly bad happens in business, it means that if you are able to flip it right, something really, really good is around the corner.

Then my Korean blood began to boil, the Aries in me rammed through, and I put my boxing gloves on. "I'm not going to give up our name. I've spent the past few years building this brand and launched in the spa industry the same time they did. We have such a loyal following, and I am seeing this thing through all the way to court if I have to."

I went to bed one night feeling upset, and at around 2 AM, I felt something shake me awake. I heard the words, "Savor Spa" loudly and leapt out of bed to see if the domain name was taken.

I couldn't go back to sleep because I knew that this was the good thing that was around the corner. For years, I had wanted to create a bridge between Savor the Success and Om Aroma. There had to be a way, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

I guess the universe got tired of waiting so it kicked me in the ass.

Instead of pouring six figures and loads of energy into a legal battle, I thought the time and resources would be better spent on something exciting, new, fresh, and positive.

I decided to redirect that money into building a charismatic brand that captured the vibrancy I was feeling:

    Savor Spa - the

Our new logo merges the colors of Om Aroma and Savor, and the "S" and "A" create a heart. Nothing can bring down passion... not even a lawsuit.

Positivity begets positivity, right? Look at what has happened in the past three months alone:

    - Savor Spa™ is a woman empowerment spa.
We have added another treatment room and five new spa services (including Microdermabrasion facials!) for the potential to double - even triple - our revenue.
    - In October, we are launching "Meetings Over Manicures" at our new Beauty Bar, the ultimate multi-tasking mix of pleasure and business.
    - We have a gorgeous Gift Wall that showcases Savor Premium Members' (women entrepreneurs) eco-products.

Plus, so much more to come:

    - New SavorSpa.com website
Savor Surprise! Box... a subscription box filled with artisanal products to savor curated by yours truly (chocolates, candles, journals, cookies, serums, and specialty gifts that I find crafted by women entrepreneurs)
    - A Champagne & Caviar party is in the works for mid-October. Want to come celebrate with us?

Do you see the power that can come from staying in a space where you are creating, thinking, solution-izing, and activating? It's a palpable, succulent, almost sexual energy that keeps you awake with all five senses alive and activated.

When faced with adversity, you can choose to spend your limited time in something positive and powerful or you can spend it in something negative and victimizing. Whatever energy you choose will grow.

Don't get distracted by life's curveballs. Flip it. Make it into something that is meant to teach you a powerful lesson that can propel you - no, catapult you - higher and higher.

As a pianist, I knew you had to shake the "bad" out before the good would emerge. So before an important performance, I would perform at every retirement center or in front of anyone who would listen (love my husband for that).

In skincare, when you switch to an organic brand from a mainstream brand, you have to get through the bad to get to the good. At first you may experience some breakouts because your skin has to detox before it can glow.

And in business, I say this:

    Bring. It. Baby. Bring it.

    xoxo

P.S. Thank you to my sister who took on this case for free, saving me beaucoup bucks. I knew I was in good hands. You've always been the family protector ever since you shoved that boy against the locker in high school when we found out he was bullying our little sister. I didn't have the balls to do it, but you did... I know we sometimes have our thing, but we're here for each other through thick and thin.

Thank you to Jessica Eaves Mathews for teaching me so much about trademarks and legal matters, as well as important life lessons. I am eternally grateful.

And finally, thank you to my husband, my rock and biggest supporter. We've stuck together "for better or for worse" and created magic, most especially our little angel... even if she still thinks I'm not a "good cooker" like you are.
