Describe your lifestyle as an entrepreneur
I love being an entrepreneur! I get to live life on my own terms in a way that is in line with my priorities. I work Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays and spend the rest of the time with my family. I have found that keeping my priorities in order, mastering my time, and developing great leaders to further our business has allowed me a life I once could only dream of. This strategy has allowed me to double my business every year since we entered the recession.
What was one of the biggest obstacles you faced when starting your own business?
Time management. When I was starting entrepreneurship, I needed an income, even if very small, to pay the bills while I built my companies. As a result I worked a lot and struggled with life balance. At the time I worked 60-80 hours a week.
My plan was to start and build my business before having kids so that I could kick back a little bit once I decided to have them and enjoy motherhood. That plan has paid off. I now have two beautiful children, 6 and 9, and work about 30 hours a week.
To actually be able to do this, my time management skills are key. I love my business and when I'm working I give it 110% of my energy, and I have also worked hard to develop great leaders who can carry much of the workload so that I have the time to be with my family. I trust them with my business and everything except for the things that only I can do.
What is one gold nugget of advice that you can give Savor entrepreneurs?
Develop great leaders. Your business growth will be reflective of your ability to produce leaders. Do not try to do it all yourself. Leverage great talent!
My motto, which I apply to myself and share with my team, is that the way to get the position you want is to "Develop people who can do your job better than you can." Then, you're ready for a promotion. It works!
When you catch yourself slipping, how do you stop from sabotaging yourself and your business?
I have great systems in place that signal me when I am spinning out of control. I have a limit on how many days I will travel and no matter how much someone wants to pay me, I don’t give in. I stay within my limits. I have a fantastic life coach I call when I need focus and I’ll do a couple calls with her to get on track. In short, I have sort of life/business rules that keep me in check and I try really hard to stay true to them. When I am not, I feel it and pull back my focus to those rules. I outline many of these new systems in my just finished new book, Get Your Girl Back (to be published in 2013).
Where do you see yourself and your business ten years from now?
I just did a life map for the next 13 years. My kids will be gone and I needed to have something to look forward to, something to get really excited about and trust me, I am. I see my business expanding into China, India, and consulting in emerging markets within my business niche, senior housing. My core team will be running the business and developing great leaders with me but much of my time will be spent writing. I have written two business books and just completed my third book, written for women and called, Get Your Girl Back. This is my life’s work. In ten years, the majority of my time will be spent writing spinoffs of Get Your Girl Back and working closely with the leaders of Bild & Company to ensure our vision is manifest.
How do you recover from a tough day? Is there anything that can instantly turn your day around?
Yes, the sound of my kids running in to greet me and their giggles remind me not to take myself so seriously. I also love to dive into my garden, it calms me every time. I also have Pandora on around the clock and listen to a great French Café station as I sit in my Parisian-decorated office and although I am working, I feel as if I am in another world. Add a latte and it’s instantly a better day!
If you could do it all over again, what would you skip, and/or what would MAKE CERTAIN to do twice?
Wow, great question. I would fall in love all over again with my husband. That was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and of course still is today but if I could experience that first love moment again, I would do it in a heartbeat!
What's your favorite part of Savor the Success?
The ability to be inspired by such amazing women. As an Entrepreneur it can be very lonely so it was like a ray of light when I learned about Savor. Finally, women who get me!
