Planning with your Calendar: Networking Time

    January 18, 2012

Do you have a networking strategy?

Are there dates already set aside on your calendar to leave your house and meet new people?

Have you identified key individuals and organizations that would partner well with your business?

Use these three questions to set your networking strategy for the quarter. Each and EVERY quarter.  Networking should not be a big, scary, complicated undertaking that requires a special binder and hours of preparation. Let’s keep it simple with a few strategies that have worked for me and my clients for years.

You know what I am going to suggest, right? You need a PLAN!  A networking or connecting plan. Think of this activity as a gift to yourself.  Here’s what you do to get started:

Make a list of 3 people in your life whom you really miss- for whatever reason.

Make a list of 3 people you worked with at a past project, job or business who you really enjoyed.

Make a list of 3 people you have been meaning to reach out to or have been wanting to meet.

And last but not least, pull out that stack of business cards that litters the bottom of your desk drawer. You KNOW you have them shoved away somewhere- never followed up on- lonely and forgotten. Pull out 3 of those cards.

You now have a list of 12 people you can connect with. Really- it’s that simple. You just need to start with a list.

And now… let’s create a plan to reach out to those people on your calendar.

The goal is to reach out via email, phone or the old-fashioned “stop in and have a cup of coffee” method to the entire list of 12. Right away. Schedule times to talk. Chat right there on the spot. Email and reintroduce yourself. Suggest lunch, coffee or a play date for the kids depending on what role the person plays in your life.

This is supposed to be FUN! The idea behind this is that you get a chance to talk about your business, educate people on what you are doing, ask for referrals and in general get your message out there.
