    A Little Love for LinkedIn

    August 6, 2009

I don't always participate in conversations that take place here on STS, but I watch what seems like most of them (though I'm sure that's not true).

I see a lot of discussion of Facebook for business and Twitter.  Don't get me wrong, I use them both and I enjoy them (well, Twitter more than Facebook, but still...).

I think that LinkedIn gets overlooked in the equation, particularly for people who are running service based businesses.

Hey, I get it.  You can't be everywhere.  Limited amount of time...You've got to run your business...Blah, blah, blah....

Trust me, I've got the same problem.

But LinkedIn has been an invaluable tool for my business.  Here's why...

As a lawyer, I'm not able to disclose the identity of my clients until it becomes public record.  Period.  I get asked for references or representative clients all the time.  And I can't give them any.

So, how do people who want to hire me know if I'm any good?

    I'll tell you how.

I have some great clients who have made sure to leave me recommendations on my LinkedIn profile.  And that's been unbelievably helpful.  I've been able to send prospective clients to look at the testimonials there and it's reassured many prospective clients.

But there are other ways to be active on LinkedIn that I find helpful.  One of the best is that I answer questions.

There are always people posting questions in different categories.  Not only does it build your credibility as an expert, but it helps someone and gets you a larger prospective client base.

    So, what's my point?

    1. If you don't have a LinkedIn profile, you should have one.  It doesn't take very long to create one.

    2. If you have a LinkedIn profile, you should maximize how you use it.

    3. If you're connected to someone on LinkedIn that you've worked with and been happy with, recommend them.  I know I greatly appreciate when people recommend me.  It sometimes makes all the difference.

How many of you are maximizing your potential on LinkedIn?

Feel free to connect with me.  I'm always happy to have more connections....
