    Don't Be Afraid to Suck

    June 4, 2009
  • If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly - G.K. Chesterton

I have a confession to make. I really hate not being able to do something. And I hate it more when I'm not able to do it right.

This week I took my boot camp instructor up on his offer to do some personal training on the 'off' days of our morning class. Our focus was working the upper body, and about halfway through the workout he mentioned working my shoulders. Unfortunately while I can do bicep curls all day, my shoulders are one area that I haven't focused on...ever. Knowing that I would look like a wobbly mess doing these particular exercises I said "I'm going to warn you, these are not going to be good. I can't lift that weight."

When I expressed my disdain for this portion of the workout, my instructor said 'Stop it. Don't be afraid to suck.'

He was right. Who cares what I looked like doing this exercise? Who cares if I could barely lift my arms to do one rep? Who cares that I haven't perfected this move on my own? It doesn't mean that I can't try it, and then work on making it better.

I realized that many things I've done in my life, I was awful at in the beginning. I had to learn to become a good business owner, a good wife, a good dog owner, a good runner. Instead of worrying about getting them all 'right' in the beginning, I just went ahead and did them - sucked at them - and then got better at doing them.

I challenge everyone to come up with one thing they want to do, but won't because they are afraid they won't do it right. Post it here and then just do it!

Melissa blogs about her life lessons from bootcamp on Savor the Success. Fortunately all of these lessons are improving her performance in other areas of her life. She also credits her instructor for giving her ideas for these blog posts, and for letting her suck in class every week :)
