Just Say "No" - A Sense of Relief

    May 7, 2009

Why do most women have a hang up with this two letter word? It’s usually one the first words we say as babies because we hear it so often (“No, do not touch that hot pan.” “No, you may not have a 10th cookie.” “No, do not go into the street without holding my hand.”) So why is it so difficult for most women to say? There are likely numerous studies conducted on this topic (which I don’t have the time to research), but I am going to make the assumption it’s because we don’t want to disappoint.

However, if we do NOT say no, don’t we disappoint anyway? Here’s another way to look at how the word “no” can be empowering – and not disappointing.

If we say no to helping out – no, I can not commit to managing that project, helping on that board, or joining the PTA – we free up the opportunity for someone else to step in and do it with enthusiasm and diligence. We do not bog ourselves down by over-extending ourselves, so we can feel more balanced and less stressed out. And, when we feel more balanced, we are more productive, healthier, and more fun to be around.

So the next time you are tempted with an invitation to do something you would enjoy but just don’t feel like it’s the right time, just say no. In time, you will see your productivity rise and you will likely feel a sense of relief.

P.S. One of Psi Bands’ goals is to land another large retailer with 5000+ stores.
