    The Time of Day

    November 17, 2008
  • Timing, Timing, Timing. It's all about the timing.

You know what, totally true...especially when it comes to blogging and social media. Now that I've been blogging regularly, I've developed some strategies about when to publish new entries, and what type of entries they should be. There is nothing scientific about my findings, but I do know that my stats have improved dramatically since I have developed my own little system. Here are some quick tips

Find out which days your site is dead and avoid posting on those days.

The typical Sarahcentric reader checks in with me when they get to work in the morning, or on their lunch break throughout the work week. This is the best chance I have to hold their attention through longer posts which they will hopefully pass on to their friends and co-workers. Therefore, I try to make sure I have something brand new for them first thing in the morning whenever possible. If I don't make first thing, I try to make it by 1pm, lunch time. If I miss that window, I wait until the next morning. I've also made it a goal to regularly schedule the site for new posts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This has not come to pass yet, but I want Sarahcentric readers to get accustomed to checking my blog on a regular schedule. And here is the biggest lesson I've learned... I no longer publish on late Friday or Saturday. My readers are already checked out for the weekend, and their favorite blogs can wait until the next week. Posts that I have worked very hard on are totally lost if I publish in that Dead Zone. The only weekend publishing I do is Sunday night so it's ready first thing Monday morning. Sarahcentric goes perfect with toast and coffee.

Your content needs to be immediate and urgent.

The blog entries that I get the most positive feedback on are very active and timely. All successful blogs' have one thing in common, no matter what the genre. They always tell the reader what happened yesterday, what's happening right now or what's going to happen tomorrow. The window of what's current and fresh is very small these days, and blogs must strike while the iron is hot. For example, I had started an essay about the progress of my book, but decided to change course when I got obsessed with Beyonce's new video "Single Ladies". Besides the fact that I love this song so much I can't stand it, there was a real opportunity to capitalize on something that people are already buzzing about. Beyonce's new album drops on Tuesday so she's in very heavy promotion; huge online advertising, big performance on SNL this weekend, the works. Why not hold off on the post about my book and piggyback on Beyonce's promotion? Lord knows she has a lot more resources than I do. It also helps establish my blog as a place that's relevant and in touch with what's happening.

So dig through your Google Analytics and check which days and times your most successful and least successful posts were published. When they were successful were you talking about the election? When it was unsuccessful, were you talking about your kindergarten class graduation? Or maybe your most successful post was about your kindergarten graduation because Beyonce performed at the ceremony! These are the tiny details that can make all the difference.
