How do you create collateral consistency without creating collateral damage to your small business identity?
How can you go from just creating a postcard to broadening your company’s visual identity?
Visual consistency extends beyond just one piece of collateral expanding across the board. Visual consistency also helps convey to your customer that she’s landing in the right place with visual cues that you’ve provided. Think of your system as a puzzle… If you give her a business card, does it relate to your Web site? If you give her a postcard, does it relate to your business card or line sheet?
In this entry, I’m going to outline how I’ve applied elements of design to make my ID system consistent throughout my collateral -both print and Web. Hopefully, you’ll be inspired to review your materials once again.

Just finished an exciting collaborative project with Maria Daines & Paul Killington on a music CD to benefit Second Chance Pet Adoptions in Raleigh, NC.!
As a talented couple who have become International rock sensations based in the UK, Maria and Paul raise animal and pet awareness through their powerful lyrics and music compositions.
Since we both have a passion for raising awareness for abandoned pets, I looked forward to collaborating on this project -working with Maria and Paul was a thrill. All twelve (12) heartfelt songs were written and performed by Maria Daines and Paul Killington to help raise awareness of abandoned pets through the newly released CD Sometimes, All You Need Is A Second Chance.

Resist Quitting Yourself: Moving thru the Crap Stage
You cultivate your own World through your own taste. If you want that 10 year overnight success like Kate Spade, resist quitting yourself and push through the stage called the Crap Gap.
Discovery
Simply, if you love art, you might be in the process of creating art. If you’re a musician, you might be in the process of picking up a guitar to learn folk music -because you love folk music that much. It speaks to you. You’ve listened to John Denver and Annie Lenox a thousand times and you’ve said to yourself, “I can do that. I want to do that. I want to get up on stage and play that.”
Theory & Practice
Eventually, your creative endeavor, whatever that may be, engulfs you and manifests itself. You evolve, nurture, and explore it within that self-assigned practice. You seek teachers, like-minded students, attend concerts, watch, absorb and allow it to fill you up. You know good taste. You’ve seen it. You’ve discerned it through criti [...]

Many people shutter at the thought of thinking themselves creative. I’ve decided to dispel the myth by breaking down the allusive components of creativity. Creativity is just as intrinsic as eating, breathing, and procreating. I can hear you now: “Oh, I’m not creative!” And to that I passionately reply, “Yes you are!” Creativity is innate, otherwise as a higher level species, we wouldn’t be here today.
A new colleague, Keith Burtis, asked me earlier this week why it was important to share my creative process and why am I not afraid to do so. So in my reply, I decide to create a pseudo white-paper on the subject and submitted it to him for inspiration.
The article highlights my:
- Influences
- Insatiable curiosity
- Four (4) Stages of Creativity
- Personal Philosophy
- Decision making process
- Sharing
- Physical Manifestation of My Creativity, and
- A Simultaneous Paradigm Shift
If creativity alludes you, I encourage you read more to learn how you can embrace your inner Cr [...]

In a recent article found on AdAge, Don’t Damage Your Brand for Short-Term Gains in a Recession Al Ries recalls a time when Packard was deemed the first luxury car. Ries explains that during the depression and a careless act of greed, Packard devalued it’s position as the leader of luxury automobiles.
Don’t let this happen to you.
Packard was coined, “The American Rolls Royce” and out sold Cadillac, not even considered competition, by a wide margin for many years. Because it was the bottom of the depression, Packard was concerned about the fraction of cars it was selling, even though they remained in the black. Their award-losing solution? They built a cheaper version of the same product.
How does this translate? You may not be selling your originals as quickly as you think you should be, but don’t reduce the original price just to make a buck.
Why? If you’ve already sold one original, you will serve only to anger your customer. Moreover, you will devalue yourself a [...]
