REPOST from Fast Company Check out all the Concrete in SquareSpace's new NYC Office by JM Lifestyles and JM Field Creative!

Squarespace's New Offices Are Very Serious

The website-building empire's beautiful new offices are in a refurbished printing press in New York's Soho neighborhood.

    • MEG MILLER 09.29.16 8:00 AM

Originally built in 1926, the Maltz Building in New York's Soho neighborhood was a factory producing printed materials during the mid-20th century. Today, the expansive loading dock in the rear of the historic building has been transformed into an entrance for the website-building platform Squarespace, whose new offices occupy the top three floors.
Squarespace moved into the recently refurbished space in March, consolidating its 322 New York-based employees. Where heavy machinery, factory lines, and reams of paper once stood, a sleek—and very seriou [...]

  • JM Lifestyles Woodform Concrete named Hottest Trends from Consumer Reports

    August 31, 2016

    Concrete is having a moment

One of the biggest showstoppers is the woodform concrete countertops on display at the booth of JM Lifestyles, an artisan workshop located in Randolph, New Jersey. The custom fabricated material, which can be used indoors or out, looks like real wood. It comes in a range of finishes, including oak and mahogany, with the option of bark edges and signature leaves imprints.
The woodform concrete earned high praise from Fu-Tung Cheng, the father of concrete countertops, who was in the Zephyr booth, showing off some of his sculptural range hoods. Cheng’s 2002 book Concrete Countertops has sold more than 175,000 copies and he’s personally trained about 5,000 contractors in the art of poured concrete countertops. “It’s become very prevalent,” he says. “It’s still not for everyone, including people who want a pristine, glass-like countertops that you don’t have to maintain. But if you’re looking for something with the character of old hardwood [...]

CAST IN CONCRETE - Brad Jenkins Design

decorative cast concrete columns in the molds
This phase of the Florham Park project is a complex kitchen remodel. Complex as in nearly all elements are custom designed and fabricated in a one-off manner. I love these types of projects because of the design freedom; on the other hand, the artisans that have to build them usually want to shoot me at some point due to the difficulties that come with pushing the envelope. It’s a lot of intensity to see a job like this through, however, in the end the result is well worth the pain as designer and contractors alike enjoy the cathartic finale.
This kitchen remodel involved the removal of an interior wall between the kitchen and stairway hall. Offering a much more open and spacious concept. I knew very early on that we would have to leave two steel columns in place. Columns that were buried in the wall and our design would have to adapt to those two elements. The chosen solution in this case; two sets of double concr [...]

These Countertops Aren’t Made From Wood.

Take a close look, although these countertops appear to be large reclaimed planks, they’re anything but. Can you tell what they’re really made from? Check out all the detailing that has been added to these poured concrete countertops. Real iron nails were embedded in the mixture before it cured completely to help out with their convincing looks and small grooves and staining were added in to make the look feel official to the touch. I saw this one by JM Lifestyles at the Mansion in May Designer Show House in Morristown, NJ and I couldn’t believe it wasn’t wood. It even feels like wood!

  • NJ/NY Stone Event!

    June 14, 2012

Last night ADIP sponsored an event that Atlas Marble and Granite and New York Stone hosted.  Marco Duran from Atlas presented a very informative presentation about the types of stone and quarrying techniques and fabrication.  Coming from a concrete perspective it was very informative.

I learned a lot about the different properties of stone and how they wear.  I also learned that many stones have similar attributes as concrete.  Mainly the difference is that people understand (generally or more so) what it means to live with these natural stones and concrete is relatively newer and generally people aren't yet aware of what it means to live with it.  Marco presented the different natural stones (limestone, travertine, onyx, marble, serpentine, sandstone, slate, quartzite, and granite). He was excited to introduce quartzite which is a beautiful stone that is very durable.  He has started to fabricate it and we got to see some slabs of it.  Very different and he thinks there will b [...]
